I think The Chocolate Watchband may have been America's best "Rolling Stones" group. They're one of the few garage-band artists who did enough songs to warrant their own Best Of release on Rhino Records and, if you spot it, grab it! It is a humdinger! You'll find the Watchband on Punk Vol 2, along with Captain Beefheart's special brew of phreak-blues and... hey! A song from Steppenwolf that's not Born to be Wild or Magic Carpet Ride! I sure hope your neighbors are ready to rock!

I recommend The Steppenwolf EQ settings for this one.

This one Should Have the "Steppenwolf Eq". So with this one, you will want to set your EQ to Zero Flat. Which of the two sound better to you?

First off, why the hell would you ever have your equalizer set at "flat"? I've got presets for Bill's Rock, Nitetime, even AM Radio for those old cuts that need a boosted midrange to sound right. So why would I set it to nothing? So, remember, kids, when you leave school and go home today, make sure to tell your parents that if they're not using their soundcard's equalizer, it means they're communists.
Secondly: nice try, arne, but when it comes to Flowers, I'm a Ride On, Baby kinda guy. Hit the harpsichord, Brian!

I EQ'd the second try because YouTube has too much 1 KHz. And because some folks don't have EQ, 'cept for Windows Media Player. Why is it that WMP won't load a YouTube page?
Is M$ trying to compete by insisting on MSN support instead of what the people use?

I'm going to say #2. I don't care for overly-bassy... guess that makes me pretty damn old! Actually, anyone with a RealTek soundcard has a graphic equalizer, it just may be a little hard to find it, but it's worth it, because it's a lot better than the equalizers that are available through media players. If you've got a RealTek card, open its program folder and there should be an equalizer just waiting for you to spend hours diddling with it. Or, if you're sane unlike me, you'll set it once and forget it.

Before we get to today’s Nuggets post, I’d like to offer this public service announcement. If you choose not to rock, then I salute you. Choosing not to rock is a valid lifestyle choice and can often be difficult to adhere to, like celibacy or being a Kardashian husband. Finally, there is a rock station for those who choose not to rock and it is Left Coast ‘70s from Soma FM. For the most part it’s deep album stuff that would be unfamiliar to most people, outside our very own Ayatollah of RocknRolla, sleepy. What’s amazing to me is how closely they stick to the station description of “mellow classic rock”. Man, is this stuff ever "mellow"! You’ll wanna check your computer for a pulse after about 30 minutes listening!
For those who do want to rock, here’s Nuggets Pop Volume III!

Not much of an Ayatollah I'm afraid. But this latest download is more to my experience than, say, the Northwest release. I'll tell you what. I'm looking at the WinRar list of files and I will try to guess the artists (artists are not displayed in the filelist)
There is no 01 Track in the zip. Is it missing?
02 dunno
03 dunno
04 dunno
05 Ah. Loving Spoonful. B-side was "Only Pretty (What a Pity)
06 The Association.
07 Probably The Mojo Men. Else the original by Buffalo Springfield
08 The American Breed
09 dunno
10 not sure. The Grass Roots(?) or Tremelos(?)
11 dunno
12 dunno
13 The Strawberry Alarm Clock
14 dunno. The title points to Lulu.

And I do know 03 by ear. Should there be a Track 01?

This is perhaps my favorite unsung Association track, from the debut album on the Valiant Records label, later Warner/Reprise and now probably Rhino or..."And Then...Along Comes The Association". Moody.

Hey, thanks for this thread, finally had a chance to listen to some of the tunes and am enjoying all of them, The Outsiders, Time Won't Let Me just played and it's wonderful, that's an excellent tune that must have gotten many people laid, I have a lot to explore, but I just saw Sookie Sookie by Steppenwolf.

Thanks, Coily! I may have to look into other posting alternatives, since the measly 78MB upload limit here keeps me from posting the whole albums.
About a week ago I increased these limits and forgot to inform you, Pinball Nirvana has had 5 mp3 players in it's history, we just lost 2 of them in January so keep on rockin' and let me know if something's in the way.

Alright, Jon, this is really weird. Last night I was listening to that Soma FM Left Coast Mellow Rock station and they played that very Bread song! I noticed it because I took a moment to reflect on the fact that it was probably the highest-quality version of that song I've ever heard... mostly because I've always heard it on transistor radios or AM car radios. There's also the fact that I haven't heard the Bread version in a long time. I would much rather make it with Dusty Springfield!

@arne: LOL! I do believe we have the same score from when I looked over the folder right before I posted it! I think we have the exact same "dunnos"! Unfortunately, before I started posting these sets, I went through and weeded out the duplicates. But not to worry... any missing songs will be caught up on before we finish!

Those "dunnos" are due to the radio playlists in L.A. and those "dunnos" didn't make the cut. I have in the past been very surprised by those kind of songs that are Big Shit in other places. And I never heard of them. And just like songs that were played on L.A. radio that I always thought went to No.1 but, like Beach Boys, were only major hits in Southern California. "All Summer Long" got airplay here but peaked at No. 23 nationwide.

The night that my Brother and me went to the Halloween Midnight showing of goremeister H. Gordon Lewis' "The Gruesome Twosome", my first gore flick screening, just before we left the car, KMET FM played Hendrix' "Dolly Dagger". And I have had many such coincidences all along. Nothing unusual there...

I think I've only seen one Lewis movie... I think it was Blood Feast... but I'm going to assume that all the others are pretty much the same. What surprised me looking at his ImDb page is that Monster A Go-Go is on his list, because there is absolutely no gore in the film. As the Mystery Science Theater version shows, there's also no plot and very little acting. Monster A Go-Go makes Ed Wood look like Quentin Tarantino.

If there was a garbage truck involved, then it was Blood Feast. But that flick is funny.
Most of his older films play as though they came from an 8 year old, but sometimes that approach works for me. The punk 80's latched on to his "Two Thousand Maniacs". It has a nice bait-and-switch bit but an unsatisfying lack of a climax.

Well, cats and kitties, if this thread was a log-flume ride, you’d be right at the crest of that final hill before the last plunge begins and I get you all wet at the bottom. Man, I’ve really gotta work on my metaphors! Only one more release from the original series after this one, then I’m gonna hit you with the hits and wrap it up with something special for our neighbors south of the border. So, without further ado, Punk Vol. III and, I must say, I think I’m beginning to like the American “Shapes of Things to Come” even better than the limey Yardbirds song of the same name!

"Little Girl" is Definitely a favorite. But Where is "Psychotic Reaction" and "Pictures of Matchstick Men"? Or am I jumping the gun? I don't mean to.

Yes, you're jumping the gun! At least you are on the Count 5. Have you noticed a certain correlation to the songs that have been posted so far? No Limeys! If you're looking for Limey Nuggets (which sounds like the item on the Chinese buffet no one ever chooses), there is a box set floating around. I, after a quick search of my library, apparently never grabbed it. Probably because "Matchstick Men" was on it. I'd rather listen to the Monday-at-noon tornado siren test.

You can have your "Pictures Of Match Schtik Men" sans British accent. The nerve stinging, sawing on dead cat's gut fiddle, well...That's still there. From the California men that "Take The Skinheads Bowling" It's, Camper Van Beethoven

Yeah, watch that "flow breaking" crap, arne! If there's one thing Pinball Nirvana's famous for is the pristine and orderly threads. That and its steadfast hatred of North Korea.
My friend's band did "Take the Skinheads Bowling"! I think everyone had a friend's band who did "Take the Skinheads Bowling" back then. I think an argument could be made that it's the "garage rock" of the '80s.

Of all these albums that have songs I’m not familiar with, I think Pop IV is my favorite. Dammit, I love me some “Hey, 98.6” so it’s good to see Keith back again with another groovy lite-rock tune! What with Keith, “Pretty Ballerina” and “Mr. Die-ingly Sad”, you’ve got some real 15-year-old-girl weepers here! Once you’re done with the hankie, rock out to “Hello” by Lee Michaels, which sounds like some bad-ass ‘70s arena rock years before its time!

Jerry was married to Phyllis. She was a nurse. And I was friends with their son Mark.
In '69, one evening, Phyllis invited the neighbor kids along with her and her kids to go see "Goodbye Columbus" (rated R) and "The Sterile Cuckoo". Double bill at the drive-in. I was 15. Mark was 13. But it worked out because they owned a station wagon.

I haven't seen Mark since "Life Beyond L.A.". He later worked as an electrician on L.A. Confidential and as a lighting technician for Spielberg and Disney, but hasn't been listed for a number of years.

I'm trying to think of a worse '60s drive-in double-bill to take the kids to, but I'm drawing a blank. I was the same age when I rode my bike to the Meadowlark Drive-In (and, yeah, they let in a 14-year-old kid on his bike into the drive-in) and caught Up In Smoke and Meatballs. Now that's a drive-in double bill! And, if you're wondering, my theme song is better than yours.

That's okay Bill. I caught "Up in Smoke" at The World Theater.
A triple-bill grindhouse for a Buck that once operated in the low-rent east end of Hollywood. Catering to a mostly urban crowd in a neighborhood that made a habit of talking back to the screen. Their specialty was films such as "The Five Deadly Venoms". But I also saw Cronenberg's "Scanners" there.

And "Sterile Cuckoo". The upstairs above Jerry and Phyllis was another buddy and his Mom. One evening she stood in the hallway in full view of me and her son in her bra. Same bra as Liza's, though I'm still not sure about her. I think she played Dick Martin on t.v. Earlier residents in that apartment building included The Doublemint Twins. Gorgeous they were.
They were twin blondes who did a snow and ski set of commercials in the mid 60's,
but that series isn't available on YouTube, else I would damn well post them here.

I'll be honest and admit that I really thought you were talking out your ass about not being able to find any of those Doublemint Twin commercials, but slap me red and call me Nancy, I'll be damned if there isn't a huge hole in the Doublemint Video History! None of those late-'60s/early-'70s commercials that were the very definition of "Doublemint Twins". What are all these videos of brunettes selling Doublemint? That's an infamnia!
I did, however, find this. And like the Pledge of Allegiance and the Apostles' Creed, I still remember all the words.

All right, big boppers! This is the one! Gone from the charts but not from our hearts, this is a smorgasbord of the greatest tunes ever to beam out of a Snoopy-shaped transistor radio! Not one, not two but three discs of Nuggets greatest hits! And these discs are of the compact variety, so Snap, Crackle and Pop stayed at home. It looks like I wasn’t quite so thorough at weeding out all the dupes on the other sets, but you might want to hang on to them. It’s interesting to hear how remastering evolved over the years. Play both “Shapes of Things” by Max Frost and you’ll hear that the vocals are no longer coming out of the right channel on the CD. Or, you could also save the homework for school and just rock yer block off!

No problem Bill. But you should know that, growing up as a cleft palate with a severe speech impediment, I am programmed to be extremely accurate and observant to the best of my ability just to be understood by others. As a consequence of my training, I (almost) never lie.
And this fact is the cause for the difficulties that I have with the locals. They want me in, but they too often want to screw people off.
And they want to take credit for things that I didn't even come up with.

So, if I tell you that I have at least one tune of mine on each and every one of those Nuggets, or that I saw Clapton walking out of my apartment complex to his black Chevy Silverado truck as I returned home, or that I have two empty boxes of chocolates that I ("Slearwig"; also me) found in 2007 atop my apartment dumpsters...a complex which claims to cater "to low income"...

...it is because I (mostly) do not lie. But I can be mistaken now and then.

They didn't teach guitar in elementary school. So I signed on for violin lessons in '64 and played in the school orchestra until I quit the violin in '69.

This is a Silvertone Guitar circa 1965. It was a damnable beast with a torturous Ruler-Flat fretboard radius. Very Poor for making bar chords. Probably selected so I couldn't make new friends and jam or gig with them away from the family. I did play some of my tunes for the upstairs buddy, and at Jerry's and at a girlfriend's house. She had a recording by an Uncle of hers.
My folks bought the Silvetone from Sears with a cherry-sunburst finish for my older brother's Christmas present. He left for The Navy a year later, in '66. You wouldn't believe the list of tunes that I pulled out of that nag, and the violin. Their art is a crafty devil.
EDIT: Please note that the picture is not the same guitar that we had. But it is the same model.

You see, sometimes there is a reason for movies such as this:
