Default Bill blows you... THROUGH YOUR MIND!

You know, I don’t think I worded that title quite right. Most of what follows is stuff I kind of remember. I could “verify facts” but I’m lazy.
Lenny Kaye is the husband of Patti Smith, as well as guitarist for her band and in 1972, he was pissed. He was watching a whole history of rock music being washed away. Sure, The Beatles were still selling albums by the millions, but what about The Standells? “Dirty Water” was world-class rock and roll, but you pretty much had to wait for the oldies station to play it. Kaye’s idea was to gather all the great songs often categorized as “garage rock” and release them in a compilation called Nuggets. Years later, Rhino Records really took the idea and ran with it. I can think of about six different Nuggets compilations released by Rhino, but their first shot was the best. It was an 18-volume set with albums dedicated to pop, punk, acid, folk and more. This set has been out-of-print for decades and was never released on CD and that’s a damn shame because, brothers and sisters, these songs are history with a backbeat! Hey, it's not completely unlikely that some of you might have been procreated while one of these songs played on an AM radio in the background. Not me, though. By the mid-'60s, my parents were in their late 30s. Knowing my mom, there is a very good chance I was conceived to the siren scream of Wayne Newton and that thought haunts me every day of my life.
I’m gonna post the first Pop set here. Grab it, listen to it, let me know what you think, let me know if you want more.

Well yeah. No. No. Oh no. Hmmmm. I'll shut my mouth.
It's the callouses again.

So which came first? The Cryan' Shames or The Seekers/Georgie Girl?
Not exactly the same. But still...

There is No Use trying to embed a "Mr. Groovy" video when the tune is owned by Sony Music. SME.
I think they're shooting themselves in the foot.

Did you create these files from 12in. records? And, do send along more Nuggets.

Thanks, Coily! I may have to look into other posting alternatives, since the measly 78MB upload limit here keeps me from posting the whole albums. Actually, I found these online. I've tracked them down to a couple of places and they sound like they all come from the same source (or they all have very exact crackles and pops!). I only have about half the set on LP and they were copies "liberated" from KMUW when they shut down "After Midnight", our tiny little rock'n'roll show. It was rumored they were going to sell the library to some college in South Carolina, so we went to work fast! They were pretty worn down from endless radio play two decades ago! These versions sound much better than the LPs I own.
Steve, if you're out there, how can I post 100MB rar files?

Lies - Knickerbockers - Styx also did it
Time Won't Let Me - Outsiders - Still a kickass song even after all these years.

Bill, would you be opposed to installing a Dropbox app? Are your tunes on your HDD?
Dropbox is 2GB storage for free and the Pro version has more space for $9.99/Mo
I use the free version. I put the files that I share in my Dropbox folder on my system and they are automatically uploaded to the Dropbox cloud. Then Right-Click the file in the Dropbox folder and choose "Copy Dropbox link". New file drops and screenshots appear in the DB Taskbar > recent list so you don't have to search for the folder to create a link.
DB will create a link to the file for download from the Dropbox server. Very easy. See?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/vyyewdqz7m...t2014.pdf?dl=0

Click the Play button for a Special Announcement:

Bill, I cannot lie to you. The following link looks like ass. Because it is a Referral Link. But Trust Me, this is a BonaFide Dropbox Link that DB created for me to invite friends and associates to try Dropbox. And You Can Believe Me When I Tell You that I receive No Financial Interest for This Favor! I only get more space in my box.

This is a Dropbox link. If you want The Freebie, then Stay Away From The Pro:

Thanks, arne! I don't know... I've become a pretty big fan of Zippy Share during my musical wanderings. I've never uploaded to it before, so I'm gonna have to study up on it. I could also just divide the albums into two and post them like that. But that's gonna have to wait. We've gotta go out to Mount Horeb and put my fiance's grandfather to rest. Good ol' Ed didn't cash out until he was 93 and he looked like he was in his late 70s. He was a grumpy old polack and he was a good egg. RIP, Ed!

That song was pretty much what convinced me to download this set. "Time Won't Let Me" is one of the greatest rock songs ever!

Since these files are so relatively small, I think I'll just settle for splitting them in two. It's less of a hassle and, hey, it worked well for King Solomon and the baby, so it'll do for me. Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair, because we're heading to San Francisco! This one includes "Somebody to Love", but not by Jefferson Airplane! This version is done by Grace Slick's first group The Great Society, and, boy, does it sound weird!

I don't think Dropbox works for Image Attachments. I've tried that in post and all I get is a prompt to download it.
I'm looking at paying for a webhost as a file server and maybe a web page. There are several low cost plans these days, though I'm not sure how reliable they are for file delivery as an attachment. I know the free Google no longer allows embedding a free page on another site like PN. Or maybe my settings prevented it?

Actually, the easiest way to do it would be to just stick it on my Google Drive and post the link to it here. Hell, with 15GB of storage space, I could shoot the whole set up here at once. But then there's posting a link to my GDrive on a public forum that is often more populated with Ukrainian postbots than with humans. And Australians. You can't swing a didgeridoo without hitting a crooked Australian around this joint.

It's got me baffled. I fiddled around and got that album cover to show from Dropbox above. I'm gona check that image's address to see where it lives. Honestly the image / web page thing is hard to understand. Mostly I get the "postage stamp" instead of my image. Like the terms> copy image address > copy link address ; they both appear, what is the difference? I may use this post for further testing ...

Our magical mystery tour takes us to the Pacific Northwest and the true birthplace of garage rock. The Beatles may have filled thousands of garages with thousands of drum kits, but one of the first songs those garage-rock stars probably mastered was "Louie, Louie". Other representatives on this album include Paul Revere and the Raiders and The Sonics, who apparently had some free time on their hands one afternoon and decided to invent Punk Rock. Pay special attention to The Wailers. According to a biography I just finished, they were a favorite band of young Jimmy Hendrix (the name change was still a couple years down the road).

Well, now, these last couple of sets have been kind of heavy, haven't they? I think any self-respecting Nuggeter would agree that there's nothing wrong with a little Electric Kool-Aid, as long as you don't drink it every day. So let's relax, pour a glass of cheap red wine from a bottle we'll burn a candle in later and pull out the acoustic guitar for Folk Rock Nuggets! A couple usual suspects are here... The Byrds doing Dylan, Barry McGuire sounding exactly like Dylan... but the rest are ones I'm unfamiliar with, like the guy who wrote "Eve of Destruction", PF Sloan, performing another of his songs. Light some incense and enjoy!

Well, it looks like we're going to have to dig out the Close N'Play again (you little fucktards! You're getting fingerprints all over those records!), and don't forget to tape a nickel to the cartridge so the needle won't skip on the 45s because we're taking a second dive into the world of Nuggets Pop. I'm gonna be honest with you here, folks... I recognize some of the groups but few of the songs. But, hey, The Outsiders are back and they are, sadly, doing the exact same song as "Time Won't Let Me" but with a different name and lyrics. One true surprise is that The Royal Guardsmen stop by with a song that doesn't mention either Snoopy or the Red Baron! I didn't know they recorded one of those!

Ah, the folks! Back on the Street Again, Mr. Tambourine Man, and Buy for Me the Rain.
And the original Dazed and Confused. And Rock and Roll Gypsies!

I ought to go look inside my ancient wooden desk for those singles and picture covers,
though the earlier Sunshine Girl used a generic sleeve. Boyce and Hart had a picture sleeve. I never owned Back on the Street, though I wanted to. The Byrds and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band I had as albums.

I ought to go look inside my ancient wooden desk. Unless the cats pissed on them.

A lot of those Nuggets were previously released by Take 6 Productions for custom radio station releases to the public. I know my neighbor had the KRLA release while I bought the "Son of KRLA" album that included "Snoopy and the Red Barron", "Yellow Balloon",
"Western Union" and what else? This was in 1967, years before Nuggets.

Do any of those have "Don't Walk Away Renee" or "Pretty Balerina"?

Pretty Ballerina will indeed be on-deck in one of the upcoming compilations!

PS: All apologies for the lack of fidelity quality on some of these releases. I normally wouldn’t hang on to such a shaggy-sounding collection, but, as I mentioned, the fact that they’ve never had a proper CD release makes a better quality hard to find. However, it does look like there’s quite a few affordable used copies out there in pretty good shape. I hope the prices don’t go up between now and when I have enough space to put up my turntable again! Think I'll pass on the 30-year-old cassettes, though.

"It's a Happening Thing" by The Peanut Butter Conspiracy is okay, but has lost a lot in the years since. I knew that song when it was new. And a very odd thing that my Brother's friend, "Donna the Drummer" gave me the album about ten years later. All but forgotten.
Hey. Do you know this one? I like it better. Barbara the lead singer was giving it away as a download about ten years ago. The numericals, they repeat themselves.

Have we done acid yet? I don’t think we’ve done acid yet. Now, don’t get nervous. I’m an old hand at driving the hand-painted rainbow school bus and I’ve got you covered; there’s a half-gallon of orange juice in the fridge and I’ve got a black light! All we need now is the tunes, and we’ve got Nuggets Acid Rock dropping in to see what condition our condition is in! Along with Kenny Rogers, there’s The Turtles, Arthur Lee and Love (probably my favorite “acid rocker”) and, the biggest surprise on the record (for me, at least), a Monkees song that isn’t bad! It’s a trippy little slice of Sgt. Pepper called “The Porpoise Song”. So let’s tune in, down load and drop out!

Yeah! The Porpoise Song and "Tapioca Tundra", and "Joanne" are good to me, and I love Pleasant Valley Sunday and admit a soft spot for Daydream Believer, probably due to some girl at the time. And Zor and Zam. Zilch. And "Last Train to Clarksville" a subversive context that may have flown over the network heads. Clarksville is/was a military base and first stop for The Drafted.
