Phew... played a game of Xevious today... the very last area, Area 17 has been too difficult for me. Well now I finally made it... after 30 years of occasional playing.
After completing the Area 17 the game throws you back to Area 7. Half a million points was too close though... but then again I think I can score a million now when I have finally done it once...!! There are many games like Xevious, but only one is the original... and best...!! My new high score 499K. ![]() You can watch the walkthrough here. This vid ends after completing Area 17. Not my video though but you get the picture. ゼビウス/XEVIOUS 1周 - YouTube

congrats! and that's a pretty sweet game. i meant to play it out sometime using save-a-game as my cheat, but for some reason never did.
did you like the 3D sequel they made? "solvolu" or something like that? i liked the concept and feel, but the actual gameplay seemed pretty stunted. |

I never, ever use any cheats on any MAME games... kills the fun for me.
I played Solvalou a bit... but it didn't impress me. However it didn't run at full speed on my machine when I tried. I guess it's not a bad game... it's just not Xevious. Video games are like movies.... sequels are rarely good... Stargate comes to mind as an exception. Empire Strikes Back too... it's actually very good game and easily playable with Mouse on MAME. PS: here's a bit of Xevious history and background: http://hardcoregaming101.net/xevious/xevious.htm |

Congratulations Man!
I never got too far with the game, but I sure do remember standing and playing Xevious at the arcades back in '82...or was it '83...or Tell Me! Loved the 3D grey rotating shields coming downscreen and the sound FX when you hit them...those things that you could never destroy. |

Wow... stunning achievement! Xevious was one of the few games I enjoyed immensely but sucked at horribly (Tapper and the old Star Trek arcade game are a couple others that come to mind). I usually ditch games I suck at pretty quickly, but something about Xevious kept pulling me back. I think it was the mistaken belief that it should be so simple with both guns and bombs... but, alas...
EDIT: Wow... after watching that video... I thought level 3 was hard! Damn thing becomes a complete clusterfuck towards the end! So do your Xevious abilities make you a decent 1941 player, kirstian? Last edited by ruby651; 04-12-2012 at 03:51 AM. |

Thanks guys...
@Ruby: I haven't played 1941 that excessively... I have decent high scores in all 194* games but nothing special.... I like them a lot though. Last edited by kristian; 04-12-2012 at 08:29 AM. |

I agree the game is great. I think the turn-off for me was the sound. The sound effects are actually nicely done and clear and sharp, but there was just something about them I did not like, besides the obvious, the background, any background sound is going to get old, and for me, on my nerves, but a short loop like that especially. Also they seem glassy, and toney.
I like how the levels were done, being strips cut from an overall map that overlap. I used Game Maker to try to achieve the same thing, but it would only work using the only ways I tried it, if the forest between was a full screen, and still there was a bit of a hitch on the swap. I was not using a tiled background, and that might be the key. a continuous strip as a drawing surface would have to be 32768 pixels tall (double for me as I doubled the resolution of the over all map and levels). I have a version that has all 16 levels, though only 1 and 2 transition, all ground targets for level one, with full animation except for the hidden objects, and the Torkans, which are stationary and static. The complications in recreating it fully is limited only to observation yet to be made. The paths for the main flying units would have to be many, so the units would have to be duped for each path, because a bunch of if/then would not work for a re-creation. GM is up to the task, but for original behavior it is just a lot of tedious work. As an original based on Xevious, my idea is Xevious 360 and would change the game to more like Raid on Bungling Bay, if you know what that is, or a top down Desert Strike. I'll post a demo of the re-creation so far after I re-visit it and get it in order. I will also set up the '360 version template to show. It is very impressive that someone could master this game, so kudos for the achievement. I have played on MAME with invincibility (it's the only way) just to observe the layout, but pretending to play as I did that. It's not the hardest game there is, but to get everything shot and everything bombed seems impossible, so it is an extremely tough game. I could not imagine the dedication it would take me to win it. However, as I understand it, winning, at least clocking it, is just a matter of staying alive, and can be done without shooting at all. Weird to 'win' yet not get on the score table though. I am using resources from, http://www.spriters-resource.com/com....php?tid=18045 and http://www.thullen.com/xevious/xevious_maps.html among others. Last edited by Shockman; 06-11-2012 at 09:36 PM. |

194x games are fun, but the theme of the later ones especially seem to be dancing around a field of bullet coming toward you.
I forgot that I made up something along this line too, a while back. It uses to popular 1945 sprite sheet that has spawned many games by novices, but none that I know of that approach the original. This is what I came up with almost in a single sitting. cursors and Z and C or joystick and buttons 1 and 2 Q to restart. No death, no level advance. Here is the first look at my Xevious
joystick or, cursors-move Z - shoot C - bomb N - jump to next area *(crash after area 16) Q - Restart ESC - Quit What is in, -The ship, bullets and bombs. Working very well. The ship is a bit fast. -Many arcade ripped sounds. -All ground targets for level 1. Most are fully animated. -Explosions and craters fully animated What is standing in, -The Toroids (the main flying enemy) is not correctly placed, not correctly pathed, and not animated, but the first level has them. What is not in, - Everything but what was mentioned above. There is just one working level. - Smooth transitions from area to area - Any player death. It's a little bit of fun for a smaller amount of time, and what is in resembles the arcade version. It's not a game, and it is not worth playing, unless you are curious. It's always nice to have a back up on the net though. Next, besides the serious work. If you are interested, I will litter the unfinished levels, all of them, with all kinds of objects that I have working, |

I have the first two levels of ground targets laid out correctly, including the hidden towers and the flag. I'm working on the third, then I will do that. Probably a couple of days.
