1976 bally hocus pocus

I am new here looking for a little help. Just picked up this machine and got it going, only thing is any time during play when you get a free game it resets the current game. It is set up for free play i also notice when I hit the button to add player the knocker goes off and it adds an extra credit to the credit display, not sure if that is normal or not. Is it possible that some one ran some kind of jumper wire between the coils to give free games that way? Sorry if this post shows up twice tried to post before but doesn't seem to be working.
