Default Am I nuts?

I've been lamenting about getting rid of my 95 Escort. Mechanically it's fine, but spots on the frame (rust) are not fixable. Minus the rust problems I'd get another 5 years or more out of it. Everything works, right down to each line on the rear window defroster. Well today I closed on a deal for...... (drum roll please), another 95 Escort! I have to pay to have it shipped to my state, but I think I did well on it, though I took a huge chance. It looks great to me, and I'm told the previous owner did some work prior to this dealer getting it (alternator, battery). It only has 84,000 miles! My old one has 163,000 on it. This is the first time I've ever bought a car without being practically UNDER it before I bought it. (I did that one time and the salesman laughed a bit). So without further ado... Old is on the left.

Do you have the VIN and did you run a check on it?
Be careful about country/state of origin. We once had a Chevy Nova with a cracked block that was a limited edition experiment in smog control, mfg for Canada. Couldn't buy the parts. Discontinued. But we could have swapped the engine with a California-spec model. It wasn't worth the cost to do it.

And the other thing is, look out for damaged goods from flood zones, fires or accidents. I'd scan the VIN.

LOL! Itchy... seriously, I have no idea what else to say. So far, you're winning in the "craziest fucking thing I've heard this year" contest! Let me know if you want a '98 Chevy Cavalier with 79,000 original miles on it to join the club. It would class the joint up real nice! If you wanna check it out first, there's a very nice picture of it on Google Earth... which kinda freaks me out.

Amongst the gang of idiots I grew up with, the "Chevy Nova" was the dream machine of the typical Wichita stoner. As in "Dude, I went to see Ozzy last night at the Coliseum and some motherfucker keyed my Nova, dude!" Sort of a Sean Penn in Fast Times at Ridgemont High but with a Central Plains twang.

Hey, Itchy! Weather permitting, you can cannibalize the new arrival for sections to weld in place of your rust problems. High odometer readings rule!

I shouldn't need to cannibalize, excepting for replacement parts of value. No rust that I'm aware of or told about. I'm told it has no perforation anywhere. 84,000 is 4,000 a year. I love hi mileage, my car would probably go another 5 years or more, excepting the trailing arms really have no support. The arms are easily replaceable, but the mounts are another story. I have the vin, though I haven't run it. The guy I bought it from specializes in buying/refurbishing old survivor cars at least 10 years old. I really doubt this is a flood car. It was listed on their site for 2,495$, and was on Ebay for 1,001$ (starting). 2400$ is bb for retail excellent condition. I paid 1300$ plus 554$ shipping. But my old car has been so good and trouble free- I know it's a good platform. Parts are readily available, and cheap- I do most of my own work on the old one. They don't think I'm nuts here...

Well, don't worry... we think you're nuts here. Not as much as most of us, but there's always room for growth. Anyways, swing by this weekend to pick up that Cavalier. $1000 flat and you get to keep the barely-used car stereo.

Itchy, if you think you're nuts then picture this.
My first car was a '64 Ford Falcon. I Loved That Car!

I had plans to repaint it Chocolate. With Antique Black burnishing around the wheel wells, like the 70's style of "Antique Appliance Finishes".

My Old Man one day decided to spray paint it Red with White Roof, like A Fire Chief Car. I was asleep at the time. On a Sunday Morning. He pretended to be drunk at the time. He did a shitty job. This was the car that I drove to Warner/Reprise in, for work.

Later in the same era, my younger Sister smashed thr front end when she hit another car with it. She was okay. She was 19. She had no job and was driving to college at the time. She initially refused to help buy a replacement car. She claimed it wasn't fair. I don't know how the hell she was able to settle with the other driver in the wreck. She got a job at McDonalds and then gave me some money.

I took that money and bought a '69 Plymouth Valiant 100 that my Old Man found for me. From a lovely and charming couple in Canoga Park, Ca.

I bought that blue '69 Plymouth Valiant 100 from Georgina Spelvin and Howard Duff.
The same car that, several years later, David Milch rear-ended with a Maserati
one night on Sunset Blvd. I paid $350 for that Plymouth.

It's all well and good to have fun in a thread, but you bastards are getting in the way of business! Now I need to find out when Itchy's gonna swing by Wisconsin with that $1000 for the Cavalier. Did I mention it's on Google Earth? It's famous!

Damn, that looks like it hurts...

An update: It has much less rust on it but it hasn't been maintained to "Itchy standards" (™). It needs a lot of mechanical work. I'll have to transfer over from the old car Brakes (probably front and rear), struts (front and rear), cv joints, fuel filler neck, and maybe even the radiator. Fortunately I know how to do all this by myself, but the REAL trick is keeping one of them operational to go to work....

christ in a bottle. >_<

i actually had something similar happen on a setup very much like that one-- instead of a squirrel, it was a bird dangling from one of the posts on the feeder. it's little foot had somehow gotten caught in the tiny crack between the post and the threaded post-hole.

i feared that it was a goner, but when i rotated the post to free it, it flew away just fine.

So far I've done Brakes ball joints, tie rods, struts (all 4), filler neck, rear control arms- it drives like new now! Still to do: Radiator, hoses, thermostat, and brake hoses, then it'll be completely done.

Just an update on this. I found out that the 2 cars are so related it's not funny. They came out 8 days apart on the production line. No shit. I fixed the bouncy speedo with the speedo from the old one. Of course I set the mileage to the current mileage. It now has 94k and some change, so that means I've put 10k on it last year, including business trips to 3 different states. Since I had the speedo out I converted the entire dash to LED's. I also took the dome light and replaced it with a 48 LED retina burner (™). While I was at it I installed GPS Navigation, and a new stereo that does everything but drive the car. It has DVD, USB, 3G wireless, backup camera, WIFI, and I'm working on power locks and remote start. It's the most modern 90's car on the road...

Steve, I think I passed cornflakes.. But I won't be needing the Cavalier, sorry.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xUEDTFS0-Q
I stripped the fuck out of the old one, so I have not only parts, but pictures of how everything comes apart.

If you still have it , get those door latch levers, hardware(clips) and rods. I have had to replace that stuff twice on '92 Toyota. Get the outside handle too. The 'Pink Floyd', nice mellow touch.
