Default My Brand New Computer

My first new computer in probably fifteen years is quite an eye-opener. To begin with, it's light years ahead of any computer I've ever owned, which meant some of my ancient programs wouldn't work at all. For the most part that's no big deal; since they were old DOS games I seldom play. Luckily, I still had the product code for my Word 2000, so I can still access all my Word documents.

More important is the fact that my modem wouldn't work, so I had to have a service tech stop by from my service provider. All the fellow had to do was remove a special link on the modem that had been needed for the old computer but not the new one. I also have to get a PS2 to USB adapter, so I'll be able to use my split keyboard again. But the worst part of all this was being without the internet for a week, especially after lurking for at least several weeks, after my mouse began locking up on me.

The disruption of my usual routine was frustrating, and left me with much too much time on my hands. Time that broke up my day, getting me up and out of my broken down but comfortable recliner. There's only so much time anyone can spend in a broken down but comfortable recliner, even if your activities range from catnaps to reading to watching either MeTV or a growing collection of DVDs.

But this started out being about my new computer, which my older brother was nice enough to buy for me. I had asked him to loan me the money, which I would've repaid within a year, making monthly payments. But my brother, who is well off, said I need the $50.00 each month more than he does, so he called it an early Christmas present. And most probably come December, he’ll send me a nice check to help me out. We didn’t always see eye-to-eye, but now we are very good friends, and overlook our differences.

As for the computer. Which is a Dell, it has 4 GB of memory. My old ones, the latest being a gifted business castoff, had all of 256 MB. The HD has 444 GB, with 412 GB free, which I doubt will ever get anywhere close to full. The monitor is called 20”, but is huge; wider than it is tall, and much easier to see than the ages old 12” eMachines monitor that I’ve used off and on for 20 years or so. Friends have bought me larger monitors, which seem to wear out. And so I have to keep digging out my old faithful eMachines monitor time and again. I have my fingers crossed for the new Dell monitor, but old reliable is sitting in the corner.

Anyway, it’s nice to be back, and I’m posting my nostalgia stuff again. Hope I don’t bore y’all too much.

Welcome to the world of PCI-e 3.0 (I hear it's great; actually, I'm still languishing on AGP-8X).

welcome to the new age of computing!
dell while not great is better than they used to be
I own three dells the one I am on now is a
Optiplex 620 (dell) and it works pretty good
with all that storage capacity you'll never come close to filling it up
Heck I only got a 80mb cap. and it gets full weekly to the point
I have to actually trash some stuff so it runs okay!
funny how much we are hooked into the internet and computers
to the point that a week without is almost like
a junkie without his fix! glad ya' finally got a decent computer (finally)

John, nice to hear you got a new pc. You'll have to try VP on it, what Operating system does it use?

Is your brother older or younger than you? Try hinting for a 50" LED Hi Def Widescreen TV for Xmas, it would thrill your old soft chair.

It's Windows 7, since I wanted to have a start button and icons. My brother is two years older than me, and very generous toward me. The computer was the only time I ever asked him for anything. He usually sends me nice checks 4-6 timrs a year.

Great news Tiltjlp!! I have a Dell d620 laptop. It was the first computer I ever built. It went out shortly after I bought it, then I found one on e bay (not working) and rebuilt mine from parts. That's why it's named the "Dell from Hell (™). It still lives today, in fact, I'm on it now.

Try a program called "dosbox", it will run old DOS programs in windows.

It can be a pain to get all the settings just right, so if the games are that old you might want to head over to Good Old Games (gog.com) and see if they have them. Most old games are less than $5 each and all the work of getting them working in windows has already been done. They had a big sale a few weeks ago, I got 25 old Sierra adventure games for $24.

Congrats with the new computer John, I bought my current computer 3 years ago and it was kinda touted as being "future proof", so far they are correct, it still kicks ass and was purchased with 9GB of ram.

With the amount of excellent writing that you accomplish, I suggest that you ditch Word 2000 and try the free OpenOffice:

Only 9? I have 16g.

Open Office kicks ass. Highly recommended, and free.

I'll give it a try, but I've used Word so long I can't imagine switching.

Well. I tried Open Office. and didn't like the *s added everywhere to my text, so I'll stick with Word. You'll know right away which post I made using Open Office, and hopefully understand why I have uninstalled it.
