I don't watch the news very often, but when I do there's usually something that really makes me depressed. Twice in the past two months there have been reports of babies being beaten and raped and I have trouble comprehending how anyone could so anything so horrible. Last month it was a 7 month old baby, and tody it was an 18 month old baby.
I've always been against capital punishment, but if anyone ever deserves to have their brains, or lack or brains, blown out, it has to be these two animals. What saddens me the most is that I'm sure if this is happeneing here, it's happening elsewhere. The violence against children seems to be escalating out of control. Death seems too good for those monsters, but that's probably the only way to get thing like that to think twice about what they are doing. News like this makes it nearly impossible to focus on pinball, or just about anything. A lifetime in jail is not nearly harsh enough for this sort of crime, in my opinion. John

Offend once, get a chance of parol. Offend twice, your thumbing your nose at society and it's laws. Your not worth keeping in gaol with the cost involved. Better to give the army something to aim at. Bang. No third offence. Harsh? Maybe. Makes sense. Definitely.

The sad thing is this thread was first posted back in 2005, and the abuse issue has gotten much worse. It's almost a daily news item about someone in our area doing brutal things to someone, not just children, and then when they get caught, they plea insanity, or say how sorry they are, when all they're sorry about is getting caught.
Will, part of the problem is that parents won't or can't by law discipline their kids. My mom was abusive at times, in that she beat he with a belt, but I eventually relized she did the best she could. I don't know what the solution is, but if more parents held their kids accountable for their actions, and didn't give them whatever they asked for, that would help. The way society is today is the reason I stay home unless I have a doctor's appointment or go grocery shopping, and never open my door without asking who it is.

It does bother me that some people do what they want against others only because they would only be behaving by an imposed authoritarian standard of punishments if they did not. They have little appreciation for stability and ethics on the basis of being comfortable, joyful, tranquil, in the same manner as being hungry but then enjoying one's dinner.
They sometimes seem happier to fling their meals at the wall instead. It's like the Hollywood folk and their hazings. They behave as if there were no laws and so what, but they hate talk about Lawyers. Just the other day Bill Nye (The Science Guy) was lecturing at USC, the local Hollywood-backed University that is not only a flagship university for medical students, but is/was also home to the USC Film School sponsored by George Lucas. As Bill Nye approached the podium, he suddenly collapsed, and these fine upstanding students of humanities and medicine did not lift a finger to assist him. They instead lifted their camera/video cell phones to snap the pictures and get the first postings of the incident up on The Internet as Bill Nye laid there on the stage, stumbled and spoke in a slurred voice. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lano...e-guy-usc.html I've been to County USC Hospital which is administered by USC. The doctors there always yield to perpetrators of hazings while ignoring the patients when the patients are subjects of hazings, even if they need the doctor. The hazing folks call it 'leverage' for submission. The Best and the Brightest? Forget about it. Among us are a nation of Gits who possess no compassion for others by the joys of their own existence, many of whom are from the high end of society like Paris Hilton, owned and without the freedom by whatever abilities they may have left to themselves. I think the peds entertain a freedom since they behave in a separate privacy to do their dirt. |

I heard about the Bill Nye thing, sad to see it at a medical school. Then there's the comedian that got shot in New Orleans where people did the same thing, took pictures of him while he was dying.
It's not just a lack of compassion, it's also a huge lack of empathy, if you can't feel bad for other people then you don't care about hurting them (or not helping them in those cases). |

I'm sure there is a vast majority of people who do care. I think the major problem is the media, and from what I hear YouTube. The station I watch has 6 hours of news a day, and seem to play up tragic stories, which does make sense since that's what pulls viewers in. And then, sine there isn't enough real news for 6 hours a day, they are repeating the same stories over & over. Thank goodness for the mute button.

99% of people are actually decent... it's the media that distorts people's minds.... there has ALWAYS been violent sickos and crazies.... but these days absolutely everything is covered in the news.... the tabloid magazines in Europe are more sensational than ever.
Media is making money out of it...it's called "social porn"... the same people who love to hang around when a car crash happens buy these magazines....they're pretending to be "shocked" and all full of empathy.... but they're actually hanging there because they hope they'd see dead bodies or at least some blood.... and get some content to their miserable lives.... Yeah, these problems are real but the sensational media (the very same media that brought us Big Brother, Jackass TV and Paris Hilton) is affecting people's minds... I don't know the US numbers... but in EU countries the crime rate has DECREASED all the time, despite all the mass hysteria that gets force fed to us every day.... That said, if someone ever does something terrible to my little son, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot him dead and sit a LONG time for that. Pedophiles who rape children should all be castrated and jailed for life.... absolutely no exceptions....!! |

I never heard the term Social Porn before, but that's just what it is. I do know that in my general area, murder and violent crime is increasing slightly every year, at some degree. probably because of copy cats. The downturn in the economy surely has something to do with it, as some folks are out of work for either the first time ever, or for extended periods, and that has to have an impact. But I still wonder if violent movies and video game aren't a part of the problem too.

Pedophiles should be shot!!! Case closed! to make me pay for their incarceration is an abomination! It's one thing to rape another adult but to perform a crime on an innocent child (who can't and often does not protect him/herself! is quite another! These pervs are also dealt with very harshly on the inside too, as the genpop in the prison system also think it sick to harm a kid. so I think they are the absolute worst

Yeah... that's why going to jail for life might be more suitable punishment than death.... they could be more creative though... it might be tough time to be inside looking out and have a child molester badge tattoeed on your forehead.

Like Jeffrey Dahmer. In prison he was taken apart piece by piece until he died.
The guards? I think they were looking the other way. |

But if you give those slugs life, prisons have to become more like factories, so thay can earn their own keep. A bullet to the back of the head is a lot cheaper than a lifetime behind bars. i could never understand why do-gooders objected to chain gangs. Maybe it's possible to sweat some sense into those fools.

I never objected to chain gangs. If they do the crime make them sweat it a bit. But, not pedos, they just don't deserve to live. Being a former scoutmaster I dealt with a stepdad, and a priest who were both molesting two different boys in my troop. these scum deserve the worst they can possibly get. they are scum in my eyes and do not deserve the comforts that jail brings, just my personal opinion...

Child Molesters, pedophiles, child rapists, if you can believe it, is something even the prisoners HATE. The perfect thing the courts can do is put these animals in GENERAL population and then they can see how bad they are.
Capital punishment - much rather not go there. Lets just say, the last time I was called for jury duty, I had a JUDGE picking up his jaw from the floor after our "discussion" about the death penalty! |

but I agree other prisoners CAN be rehabbed imo but the cost is way too high. I went without cable for most of the 90's yet most prisons had it! no fair! it costs the USA about $42,000 a year to house one prisoner. that is more than I make! multiply that by millions and well now you see why we're so poor! well one of the reasons...

Yes, but are you sure the cable service in prison was paid for by the State?
The cable company might have provided the service gratis in exchange for a tax write-off. Also I'm thinking the cable service to the prisons was probably basic cable without HBO, Showtime and The Playboy Channel included. I think the prisons also tend to censor provocative content. It's all about crowd control there. Now, it could be the cable was provided for Internet use, to allow communication between prisoners and their lawyers in the same manner as telephone service. That would be required by The Constitution. But again, the prisons probably block content. |

I know that certain prisoners do have access to the internet but the prison officials do use blocks for certain sites. or site types. Yeah I can see them using it for a tax write off, I never thought of that.
