What Memorial Day Should Be About

While Memorial Day in the US is set aside to remember and honor our war dead, many families expand it to include all those family members who have gone before them. Rather than celebrating war, it should be seen as trying for some degree of worldly peace, since that is the hoped for result of most every war, at least it should be, in the eyes and hearts of every nation’s people. Soldiers are not really enemies, government policy is. Soldiers are the victims or pawns required to fight for their government’s policies, right or wrong. But let’s put politics aside for now, that isn’t the message I have to offer.

I can’t lay claim to the ideas I’m putting forth here, they came from a high school teacher of mine back in 1963 or 64. Although he taught English and English Lit, both favorite classes of mine, John Hummel was deep thinker at heart. He suggested that we should use Memorial Day as a day during which we also Forget. He suggested that first we needed to forget our failures, because holding on to them often kept us from moving ahead and improving as individuals. But he also advised us to forget what we felt were wrongs done to us by others, since holding on to them embittered us and made our lives miserable. He said that to cast off hatred or ill feelings would lighten and brighten our lives, since dark energy simply bogs us down.

But the suggestion he made that has helped me the most was to forget about making excuses for ourselves when we don’t succeed at some task at hand. Failures and mistakes are a part of both life and learning, and excuses simply allow us to give up, rather than trying again, and probably being a success. That idea helped me as a writer understand and accept rejections, and since I was able to keep working, I eventually improved my writing craft to the point that the rejections became fewer and fewer. But Mr. Hummel said that besides Forgetting, you also had to Forgive, in order to be free to move on in life, to become the best we could be. He said that by being as successful as we could be, we were truly honoring those who we remember on Memorial Day.

I’ve just started Leningrad: The Epic Siege Of WWII, 1941-1944, by Anna Reid. I’m interested in how Hitler was able to control his people, and I hope to find out just how close he really came to world dominations.

Holy Warriors: A Modern History Of The Crusades, by Jonathan Phillips. I find it intriguing that religion and war seem to be such strange bedfellows, as the saying goes.
And Furthermore, by Judi Dench. I’ve like Judi Dench’s work in both 84 Charring Cross Road and As Time Goes By, and so I figured I’d learn a bit more about her. Her career has been so impressive that this book is just one of several she has written, which I will most probably read also.

The Studs Lonigan Reader, by James T Farrell. A series of three novels written in the 1930s, they deal with the story of a Chicago youth, who while tough is basically good. As the books progress, Studs deteriorates into an alcoholic. The three books are Young Lonigan, 1932, The Young Manhood Of Studs Lonigan, 1934, and Judgment Day, 1936. I read one or all of these books some 35-40 years ago, and want to see what I think of them now.

This is my main arcade. Mirror ceilings and decked in neon.
Probably the best arcade in Los Angeles, on Vermont Ave. across the street from LACC (Los Angeles City College).

Haven't been here in a couple of years, so the shot of pinball machines *might be overstated*, but in general, they always have at least 9 or ten tables up and ready to go and are open 'til 1:30 A.M. Right On!
The illumination level in the arcade pics is a little high. With the black lights,
the scene is appropriately darker in person, as should be.

Maybe tomorrow... :)

I thought it was a perfectly good example of what's to come, whether it be Tron, Transformers,AC/DC, or whatever, that is the direction it's going.

I know from speaking personally with Gary, Roger, George, Rick, Jack, and pretty much every other person in the industry who has say in the matter ... When lines are crossed, it'll be me/VPF they think of. It's just the way it is, since I personally approached them seeking their okay to do what we do, and I got it, albeit unofficially. I don't do things in shady fashion, I prefer to take the high road.

We are currently the only site with any permission to do what we do from those in the industry, and we'll do it with respect.

Any table, whether using ROM rips or other sources using the same layouts and art as machines currently in production is inappropriate. The agreement regarding VPinMAME was probably intended to be all encompassing, since it was an era in which ROM emulation was the primary method of recreating. Since then, many new techniques have been used which can accurately recreate new tables. While this may be an assumption, I feel it falls dead center in the spirit and motivation of the agreement in the first place.

PS - Please keep it civil guys.

Most of you know me, this is for the few that don't and browse my site. I just wanted to say if you go to my site and find weirdness - I know about it and am working on it. We weren't hit with an attack (that I know of). This seems to be something installed that broke something else. Right now we have decreased functionality to try to isolate the issue. I just don't want anyone to get discouraged from checking things out in this diminished state. It's entirely possible we may have to start over (VERY last resort). We even have the people at Simple Machines stumped. When the guy in charge of the software comes over and says "I have never seen that before..." . It can never be good.

Among the things that I loved while travelling along the U.S. Routes, Route 66, etc. from Pennsylvania to California and back again, and back to California, are/were the curios, the shops, the tourist dives, the truckstops, the Burma Shave Signs (long gone?), Stuckey's, and such, and some time ago I noticed the informative bits that have been painted on the sides of UHaul Rental Trucks. Aligned with the States and Canada, these Supergraphic displays of paint and information run the gambit from Birds of a State to highways to the story of The Midnight Special and the Emancipation of Slaves.
